Genesis 49:1-12
READING
49 Then Jacob called for his
sons and said: “Gather around so I can tell you what will happen to you in days
to come.
2
“Assemble and listen, sons of Jacob;
listen
to your father Israel.
3
“Reuben, you are my firstborn,
my
might, the first sign of my strength,
excelling
in honor, excelling in power.
4
Turbulent as the waters, you will no longer
excel,
for you went up onto your
father’s bed,
onto
my couch and defiled it.
5
“Simeon and Levi are brothers—
their
swords[a] are
weapons of violence.
6
Let me not enter their council,
let
me not join their assembly,
for they have killed men in their anger
and
hamstrung oxen as they pleased.
7
Cursed be their anger, so fierce,
and
their fury, so cruel!
I will scatter them in Jacob
and
disperse them in Israel.
8
“Judah,[b] your
brothers will praise you;
your
hand will be on the neck of your enemies;
your
father’s sons will bow down to you.
9
You are a lion’s cub, Judah;
you
return from the prey, my son.
Like a lion he crouches and lies down,
like
a lioness—who dares to rouse him?
10
The scepter will not depart from Judah,
nor
the ruler’s staff from between his feet,[c]
until
he to whom it belongs[d]
shall come
and the obedience of the
nations shall be his.
11
He will tether his donkey to a vine,
his
colt to the choicest branch;
he will wash his garments in wine,
his
robes in the blood of grapes.
12
His eyes will be darker than wine,
his
teeth whiter than milk.[e]

49:1
– Prophecy continues for all the brothers
49:2
– Come together to listen, listen to the father
·
Same words in last words of Moses (Deut 31) and the oracles of Balum
(Num 24)
·
There is a framing between 1 and 28 showing God’s blessing to Mankind
and to them specifically – noting that they live because God allows it and they
make decisions and work because God allows it
·
Are WE ready to listen to Prophecy or are we only making our own plans?

3-4 –
Reuben – what he had been blessed with naturally he decided to get rid of.
READ 1 Chronicles
5:1-2 –
What is his failure?
· Being
up and down like the waves – turbulent
· No
honor to the family
· No
honor or integrity
The father didn’t want relationship because – he had come into jacob’s house and defiled
it (35:22)
Consequence – we
read later that…
5-7 –
Simeon and Levi –
What is their failure?
· Sword
isn’t bad – it was how they used it
· They
killed men in anger rather than purpose – emotion overtook them – vs. fruit of
the spirit (34:25)
· They
even killed animals because it pleased them – Jerry Sheridan story – judge a
man
· Fury
and cruelty
The father didn’t want relationship in council from them nor wanted to be around them (in the assembly even)
Consequence –
they will be scattered – They would not be included in the inheritance of the
land. Simeon essentially disappears from
biblical narrative and Levi becomes the priesthood.
Israel is a place not just a person now.

Joseph (Genesis 37:10)
READ Psalm 67:67-72
Then he rejected the tents of Joseph,
he did not choose the tribe
of Ephraim;
68
but he
chose the tribe of Judah,
Mount
Zion, which he loved.
69
He
built his sanctuary like the heights,
like
the earth that he established forever.
70
He
chose David his servant
and
took him from the sheep pens;
71
from tending the sheep he brought him
to be
the shepherd of his people Jacob,
of
Israel his inheritance.
72
And David shepherded them
with integrity of heart;
with
skillful hands he led them.
9 - 10 He will be a victorious warrior
· He will be a lion like one that is done eating and
sleeping in its den - strong
· He is along the line – he will continue to have the
scepter – who is next after Judah?
· Nations will be obedient to him
· If you have the name Shiloh – simply an untranslate
from of Hebrew meaning “one to whom it belongs” – not to be associate to a name

5 “I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will
bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing. 6 If
you do not remain in me, you are like a branch that is thrown away and withers;
such branches are picked up, thrown into the fire and burned. 7 If
you remain in me and my words remain in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will
be done for you. 8 This
is to my Father’s glory, that you bear much fruit, showing
yourselves to be my disciples.
o 9 “As
the Father has loved me, so have I loved you. Now remain in my love. 10 If
you keep my commands, you will remain in my love, just as I have kept my
Father’s commands and remain in his love. 11 I
have told you this so that my joy may be
in you and that your joy may be complete.

Final Questions –
Where is prophecy found? When do you go there and look?
What is the consequence of sin in our lives? What examples do we have of sin in the bible
that we can relate to? Who can help us
with these problems? How does sin impact
our relationship with others and God?
Will God continue his plan? He chooses who he wants…What does a
relationship look like with Him both now and later (Real Joy)…
Do we strive to be one of strength, victorious, and
providing plenty? The only way that will
happen is by being picked and being in relationship with the prophecy – not by
us
